I grew up in a perfect looking home that most people would drool over. My friends would tell me that their parents were embarrassed to have me over because their homes weren't as nice. I don't OWE them a college education. I grew up in a perfect looking home that most people would drool over. My friends would tell me that their parents were embarrassed to have me over because their homes weren't as nice. Well guess what? My only memories of that stupid house are that I couldn't leave one thing out of place for 5 minutes or my mother would freak. And the fear of spilling something. And my room being so pretty and perfect and preppy that I couldn't ever have anything "Me" in it. No posters on the wall, no fun beanbag chair, no funky colored pillows, no "I love ____" written on the desktop. Just pretty, beautiful, magazine-worthy, perfect...hell.
Go Steph. I'm the cookie-cutter mother on paper - SAHM, college-educated, minivan, crafty...but I'll be the first to say that Steph is probably a better Mom than me. You Peas can trash her all you want b/c her life is different from your standards, but I guarantee you when her boys are grown and she is elderly and/or sick, they'll be right there taking care of her.
And their wives will be lucky because they won't end up being judgmental snobs like a lot of the Peas' kids will be.

I have 4 siblings. Three of us went to college, 2 did not. The two that did not are by far the most successful. They make more than the rest of us combined, they are much more financially stable overall, they are both happy and loving life. This is not to say that college never helps, of course it does. But seriously, it's not black and white. Please stop thinking so....narrowly. Gawd.

Are you my BFF from childhood? I always felt so bad for her because she lived in a perfect home. I remember her mom making us put her Barbie clothing away neatly and being strictly forbidden to sit on her bed for any reason because it ruined the look.

Add in people who have degrees and choose to work for a charity, serve in the military or Peace Corps and you will find many well educated people doing what they love but not getting rich doing it.

174, you might be right but it's also highly likely that Sass is a drama queen and her kids just might not be as psycho as she makes them out to be. She's always been super hard on those kids and constantly puts them down. I would bet money that she does that to them to their face every single day. She seems like a horrible person.
Sass may have adopted those kids and given them a roof over their heads and food on their table but she hasn't provided a stable loving home for them any more than the place they came from. From the day she got them, she has made them seem like a burden. From reading her posts over the years, it honestly feels like she HATES those kids. I feel so sorry for them.

WHY is it a parent's job to save for their child's college education?? I'm gonna save for my retirement instead. The kids can get scholarships and loans just like I did. I don't OWE them a college education. I DO however OWE it to them to properly prepare for my retirement so that I don't become a financial burden to my children when I am old and no longer able to work.

Merit-based scholarships are very rare, and needs-based scholarships use the PARENTS' income to determine "need." Maybe you don't have high technology bills. Maybe you are already a leeching member of the lower class. In that case, you're right, your spawn will probably get full rides. Many of the rest of us would like our children to have a better life.

You can get loans for a college education - if it means that much to you and that's a priority you can't afford out of pocket. Your parents, however, can't take out a loan "for their retirement". It's more prudent to save for retirement at this point - and hope your children pick college majors that will actually allow them to pay back their loans!
