Back to the "two house" thing. I live in an area that is within 1 hour min there are quite a few lakes, so it's not really uncommon to meet people that have a home in the city and one at the lake. Lake properties have sky-rocketed in the last 15 years or so, so most Lake Houses (not trailers) are worth at least $200,000. You'd be hard pressed to find something that wasn't a tear-down for less than that. These people city homes are usually in the $250,000 up price range.
Sounds like TSM's 2-house's are really not all that special, but good for her. I'd love to have a Lake house, but it will never happen.

Lake homes are very fun to go to, but having double work to upkeep two homes takes up so much time, or money if you hire it done. I would much prefer to rent for three month, and then not have to worry about paying a mortgage all year, nor pay the taxes on a lake home (where I live, lake property is heavily taxed). Also, one year we had a real asshole neighbor, so it was nice to leave at the end of the season, and never have to deal with him again (crap like complaining to our landlord that we were playing music on our pontoon on a Saturday night at 8:00, he even admitted it wasn't loud, but he could hear it when he stood on the deck, but not when he was in his bedroom. As soon as he asked us to, we turned it off, but he still complained).

Here's the thing. While you must be extremely proud of how smart your child is, the reality is he may never live a completely independent life. By far, the majority of Peas with Autism/Aspy kids just won't face this reality. As a taxpayer, I really hope that they are making financial provisions for their child's care, particularly for when the child is grown and they, the parents, may be unable to care for them.
I think so many parents of special needs are in great denial of their child's future's. They live in a la-la land were they child will go to college, have a family and a brilliant career and make buckets of money. It's unrealistic at best for the majority.
I think they are all counting on the child's "brilliance" and their own "wishes and hopes" and planning on tax payer dollars to eventually bail them all out of potential financial disaster when nothing they hoped for happens.
And as a taxpayer - that infuriates me.
Reality is - your child is not normal. Social skills matter - a lot - in our society.

Back to the "two house" thing. I live in an area that is within 1 hour min there are quite a few lakes, so it's not really uncommon to meet people that have a home in the city and one at the lake. Lake properties have sky-rocketed in the last 15 years or so, so most Lake Houses (not trailers) are worth at least $200,000. You'd be hard pressed to find something that wasn't a tear-down for less than that. These people city homes are usually in the $250,000 up price range.
Sounds like TSM's 2-house's are really not all that special, but good for her. I'd love to have a Lake house, but it will never happen.

Empty vacation homes - like our lake house - tend to be a magnet for thieving meth heads. We never got broken in to, but it was always a worry.
A friends' place had a pipe break, flooding the house for days/weeks/who knows how long. It was a mess.
Another time we walked in to our place, after not having been there for a month or so, and the fridge/freezer had conked out. So fucking gross. Right out of 'Horders'.
A second home is a pain in the ass.

As soon as he asked us to, we turned it off, but he still complained).

We take a number of really great, varied, no-hassle vacations every year for less than the annual mortgage/insurance pmts on our former vacation home.
Best way to enjoy a lake house is the same as the best way to go boating....make friends with someone who has those.

Thank you for your honest post. I'm sorry to hear what you have to deal with every day. I mean that sincerely.
Here's the thing. While you must be extremely proud of how smart your child is, the reality is he may never live a completely independent life. By far, the majority of Peas with Autism/Aspy kids just won't face this reality. As a taxpayer, I really hope that they are making financial provisions for their child's care, particularly for when the child is grown and they, the parents, may be unable to care for them.
I think so many parents of special needs are in great denial of their child's future's. They live in a la-la land were they child will go to college, have a family and a brilliant career and make buckets of money. It's unrealistic at best for the majority.
I think they are all counting on the child's "brilliance" and their own "wishes and hopes" and planning on tax payer dollars to eventually bail them all out of potential financial disaster when nothing they hoped for happens.
And as a taxpayer - that infuriates me.
Reality is - your child is not normal. Social skills matter - a lot - in our society.
