Building a career is very difficult when you are married to someone in the military. You move a lot and have to keep starting over and over at the bottom. Many spouses can't make enough to justify the cost of daycare on entry-level pay. Another barrier is that a lot of companies won't hire a military spouse because they know the employee isn't going to stay longer than two or three years at the most. Even if a spouse does get a job with a schedule that allows her husband to parent while she's at work, that plan is out the window when he deploys for six or twelve or fifteen months at a time. I love brining my birds and get the turkeys or turkey breasts from Trader Joe's or a butcher that orders heritage or free range birds that aren't injected with salt or given antibiotics.
Two years for Christmas, my MIL catered everything from a local cafeteria. It was awesome. Then last year, the bird was one of those Butterball pre cooked heat and serve birds. It was awful.
This year dh and I are going to get a great bird and brine it. We're also going to prank the family--I'm also going to stuff it with a tiny Cornish hen and then cover it with lemons, onions, thyme and rosemary so no one sees the little bird. Then when we cut into it to serve, everyone will think the bird was pregnant!!
I saw this on TV, and it was hilarious. Everyone was so upset about the small bird that they totally forgot that turkey's lay eggs.

Many spouses can't make enough to justify the cost of daycare on entry-level pay. On Alton's show, he warns about the bird being too salty when you buy a grocery store "self basting" bird which is injected with a salt water mixture. Most poultry includes this "brine" of chicken flavor, salt and preservatives.
I love brining my birds and get the turkeys or turkey breasts from Trader Joe's or a butcher that orders heritage or free range birds that aren't injected with salt or given antibiotics.
Two years for Christmas, my MIL catered everything from a local cafeteria. It was awesome. Then last year, the bird was one of those Butterball pre cooked heat and serve birds. It was awful.
This year dh and I are going to get a great bird and brine it. We're also going to prank the family--I'm also going to stuff it with a tiny Cornish hen and then cover it with lemons, onions, thyme and rosemary so no one sees the little bird. Then when we cut into it to serve, everyone will think the bird was pregnant!!
I saw this on TV, and it was hilarious. Everyone was so upset about the small bird that they totally forgot that turkey's lay eggs.
