S'ok banana lady. I think a lot of people are just clueless about home schooling, and it shows. My kid takes some classes at the public high school- a music class, and a foreign language. The music teacher is also the band director, and he gets really annoyed the first 3 chairs of the all district band (in a high achieving, super extra curricular focused area) always go to the home schooled kids. The language teacher also chairs the math competitive club, and he gets wrapped around the axle the home schooled kids always win that, too. And get scholarships to study foreign language in other countries.
Hey, it's working for us, what can I say. It's nice to tell yourself they all sleep until 12, wear skirts, and teach that Jesus rode a dinosaur, but the truth is they are thriving.
And I know lots of people who home school kids with special needs, including myself. Sometimes it's the only way your kid can succeed, and you do what you have to do. The school system wants to shuffle them through with the least amount of effort expended- what else can you do?

One co-worker has his wife homeschooling their kids and she has no high school diploma. He lies and says he's homeschooling them and uses his college degree for certification. He will sometimes complain about going home and teaching because his wife didn't understand the lesson plan.
Another co-worker has his wife homeschooling and she sleeps until noon, spends about two hours on lessons, then calls it a day. They do have to participate in sports, so she will take them to karate classes. He's contemplating about putting them in public school since they are so behind.
Yeah 19, we ran into the same deal when my oldest was in a public online charter school. I technically was doing the homeschooling at home but the local school district had to allow her to participate in band and they HATED it. They would not let her past 2nd chair no matter what in class. But every time she tried out for region or at band camp or any competition outside of the school, she beat their first chair by a lot of points. I hate the homeschooling laws in this state, it is one of the worst. If my dh didn't have such a good job here we would gladly move to a different state that has better homeschool laws.
We had someone today ask us where our kids go to school and when my husband said they are homeschooled she said oh I don't approve of homeschooling. It was one of those WTF kind of moments. I would NEVER dream of telling someone oh hey you go to Mithcell Elementary?, I don't approve of that school.

23 Are you trying to make a point? I was an education major and I did get my degree. I could have gotten a job anywhere I wanted, I just chose to use my skills to teach my own children. When the last one graduates, I may get a job, maybe not, it depends on what is going on in our lives at that moment. Maybe I'll have grandchildren by then and I may want to spend a lot of time with them. Who Knows? No crystal ball here. We take it one year at a time.

I'm not 19, but I know several families where homeschooling didn't work, not that they failed, more like the mom realized she was not cut out for it. Which is fine. Good to recognize that and let the pros do the teaching.
I also know several families where it has been very successful. There are several in a group and they trade off teaching subjects, depending on who is good with certain subjects. They also belong to a homeschooling group that meets for social times and for the moms to discuss the planned curriculum and field trips. None of these families homeschool for religious reasons, they are just disillusioned with the public school system. A couple of them have special needs kids, and they seem to be doing well.

I hate the homeschooling laws in this state, it is one of the worst. If my dh didn't have such a good job here we would gladly move to a different state that has better homeschool laws.
We had someone today ask us where our kids go to school and when my husband said they are homeschooled she said oh I don't approve of homeschooling. It was one of those WTF kind of moments. I would NEVER dream of telling someone oh hey you go to Mithcell Elementary?, I don't approve of that school.

I'm not 19, but I know several families where homeschooling didn't work, not that they failed, more like the mom realized she was not cut out for it. Which is fine. Good to recognize that and let the pros do the teaching.
I also know several families where it has been very successful. There are several in a group and they trade off teaching subjects, depending on who is good with certain subjects. They also belong to a homeschooling group that meets for social times and for the moms to discuss the planned curriculum and field trips. None of these families homeschool for religious reasons, they are just disillusioned with the public school system. A couple of them have special needs kids, and they seem to be doing well.

I just spent 20 minutes going through stuff in my kitchen. Got rid of random things I didn't need, like the cartons from Girl Scout cookies that no longer had anything in them, put some photos in the album and went through the stack of paper I had in the kitchen.
