if he was flying out on Monday, I would hear from him right before he took off, when he landed, when he checked in to the hotel to let me know the room number in case of emergency, once around dinner time and then again before he went to bed.

We're excessive so this is my answer:
if he was flying out on Monday, I would hear from him right before he took off, when he landed, when he checked in to the hotel to let me know the room number in case of emergency, once around dinner time and then again before he went to bed.
On Tuesday, I would hear from him in the morning (usually wakes me up), then around lunch/break time, dinner time and then before he went to bed. I may hear from him once or twice in between if we have something going on at home that we need to discuss.
Same on Wednesday and Thursday
On Friday when he's leaving, he would call me once in the morning when he got up, before he got on the plane and then after he landed.
