LONDON – A mysterious new respiratory virus that originated in the Middle East spreads easily between people and appears more deadly than SARS, doctors reported Wednesday after investigating the biggest outbreak in Saudi Arabia.
More than 60 cases of what is now called MERS, including 38 deaths, have been recorded by the World Health Organization in the past year, mostly in Saudi Arabia. So far, illnesses haven't spread as quickly as SARS did in 2003, ultimately triggering a global outbreak that killed about 800 people.
An international team of doctors who investigated nearly two dozen cases in eastern Saudi Arabia found the new coronavirus has some striking similarities to SARS. Unlike SARS, though, scientists remain baffled as to the source of MERS.
In a worrying finding, the team said MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) not only spreads easily between people, but within hospitals. That was also the case with SARS, a distant relative of the new virus.

Its pretty safe to say that not all schools are equal. And not all kids are the same. Parents need to evaluate their options and pick the school that best fits their child's needs. Some of us may be lucky and have more options than others. Wherever you choose to educate your child you still need to be involved to make sure your child is learning and adapting to their surroundings. I care about my kid's education so I was a little pissed in finding out he got the least desirable teacher for next school year. We are allowed to request teachers for our kids. So I guess since I got my request last year, I didn't this year...probably because this lady is a mean old bitch who needs to retire and NOBODY wants their kid in her class!

Yes, my daughter does have scholarships. She has zero educational debt so far. The only expense we pay for are her books. She had so many people try to tell her she couldn't get an incoming freshman scholarship as a homeschooler. You score high enough on your SAT and ACT and Universities do not care WHERE you got your information, just that you have it. She has to maintain a high GPA to keep that renewable scholarship, so she makes sure to do so. And she lives on campus and has to be self-motivated. I do not have anything to do with her education at this point. Well, besides being super proud of her and listening to her when she needs to talk.
And I know it was a snarky comment from someone earlier but if I had to vote on the greatest home school mom? Susan Wise Bauer. She was doing it when the resources available to us now didn't exist. She created some of them. Those that paved the way before me get major kudos.
Honestly, I don't think everyone should homeschool. Some people probably do have decent schools near them. I don't. Some people can't afford to do it because it isn't cheap, some people don't have the advantage of having a parent home available to do it. It wasn't something I originally planned to do. But I don't discount anyone beased on the schooling choices they make. I know families that homeschool some of their kids but not all. And we take it year by year,knowing that circumstances could change for a particular child at any time and we are prepared to adjust as necessary. And that is the point I think. If the only thing you advocate for s the cookie cutter one size fits all educational system then you don't have a basic understanding of how people learn. I don't even use the same curriculum for each of my kids because they learn differently from each other. More work for me and I don't care. This is my job and the most important one I will ever do.

PS - If you hadn't noticed, this is the blog. Yes, I graduated with a BS in 3.5 years and no loans, about 85% scholarships and the rest paid by my parents and myself. I was also active in several academic groups as well as sports teams. My kids are still preschool age, so no experience there yet. I have a nephew that's 11 years old and still sleeps with his single mother. He's going into 4th grade, as she sent him to school late and he got held back a year. He still struggles with it, and the only reason he wasn't held back again was his age. The principal is her cousin, too. The school tried to put him in speech therapy, and she wouldn't let them, she feared he'd be "labeled" as "retarded" (her words, not mine). He doesn't know how to ride a bike, nor has ever had a friend over to play or spend the night. He's never been to a friends home. I'm worried about him. Should I say anything, or just keep my nosey nose out of it?

People can care about their kids education and keep them in public school. Private school isn't the end all be all of learning.
Its pretty safe to say that not all schools are equal. And not all kids are the same. Parents need to evaluate their options and pick the school that best fits their child's needs. Some of us may be lucky and have more options than others. Wherever you choose to educate your child you still need to be involved to make sure your child is learning and adapting to their surroundings. You don't just dump them off and wait to see how if goes - you get involved and pay attention. That is, if you care.

I care about my kid's education so I was a little pissed in finding out he got the least desirable teacher for next school year. We are allowed to request teachers for our kids. So I guess since I got my request last year, I didn't this year...probably because this lady is a mean old bitch who needs to retire and NOBODY wants their kid in her class!
Since I'm not a teacher in the district, my request isn't granted while those who do teach and send their kid to the district get whatever they want and get the better teachers for their kids. Now, how is THAT fair?

I don't really care what my daughter does in the future. Her happiness is all that matters. That and she is a good person and doesn't act like a cunt all the time puts her miles ahead of the people here. She has already won.

Yes, my daughter does have scholarships. She has zero educational debt so far. The only expense we pay for are her books. She had so many people try to tell her she couldn't get an incoming freshman scholarship as a homeschooler. You score high enough on your SAT and ACT and Universities do not care WHERE you got your information, just that you have it. She has to maintain a high GPA to keep that renewable scholarship, so she makes sure to do so. And she lives on campus and has to be self-motivated. I do not have anything to do with her education at this point. Well, besides being super proud of her and listening to her when she needs to talk.
And I know it was a snarky comment from someone earlier but if I had to vote on the greatest home school mom? Susan Wise Bauer. She was doing it when the resources available to us now didn't exist. She created some of them. Those that paved the way before me get major kudos.
Honestly, I don't think everyone should homeschool. Some people probably do have decent schools near them. I don't. Some people can't afford to do it because it isn't cheap, some people don't have the advantage of having a parent home available to do it. It wasn't something I originally planned to do. But I don't discount anyone beased on the schooling choices they make. I know families that homeschool some of their kids but not all. And we take it year by year,knowing that circumstances could change for a particular child at any time and we are prepared to adjust as necessary. And that is the point I think. If the only thing you advocate for s the cookie cutter one size fits all educational system then you don't have a basic understanding of how people learn. I don't even use the same curriculum for each of my kids because they learn differently from each other. More work for me and I don't care. This is my job and the most important one I will ever do.
Question? Do none of you have smart kids that have scholarships and such? I only ask because so many of you seem to act like it isn't possible. And you would clearly know that it is if your kids had done it.
Hell, I didn't get to start college until I was 22 and while I didn't get an incoming scholarship, after my first year my GPA was high enough that they started rolling in.

PS - If you hadn't noticed, this is the blog. Yes, I graduated with a BS in 3.5 years and no loans, about 85% scholarships and the rest paid by my parents and myself. I was also active in several academic groups as well as sports teams. My kids are still preschool age, so no experience there yet. But, I am smart enough to understand this is a smack blog, not a brag board.
I have a nephew that's 11 years old and still sleeps with his single mother. He's going into 4th grade, as she sent him to school late and he got held back a year. He still struggles with it, and the only reason he wasn't held back again was his age. The principal is her cousin, too. The school tried to put him in speech therapy, and she wouldn't let them, she feared he'd be "labeled" as "retarded" (her words, not mine). He doesn't know how to ride a bike, nor has ever had a friend over to play or spend the night. He's never been to a friends home. I'm worried about him. Should I say anything, or just keep my nosey nose out of it?
I know this isn't the brag board. The only reason this branch of conversation ever started was that I was pointing out that not everything in my life is drama filled negativity since there are people here who don't understand that life can hand you both good and bad.

There were many companies that classified FT as fewer than 32 hours. Again, nothing new.
When I started at my former company in 1999, FT was 28 hours a week. Then they changed it to 32 and then 34, so they could work people more and not have to give them benefits. Again, pre-Obamacare.
