I also have a good friend who's brother is an OB/GYN. Several years ago, he and his partners pooled their money and invested in a tool that reads women's pap smears more accurately. 31 - Pay is one thing. You can still pay employees a decent salary (even a magnificent salary - look the Komen payroll)and still be a non-profit. I actually think a lot of health professionals, including doctors, are generally underpaid.
What I object to is for-profit insurance companies. They skim HUGE amounts of money off the system, they make obscene profits while simultaniously jacking up premiums and lobby congress for more tax loopholes. In my experience, for-profit insurance companies are HUGELY inefficient and are, in fact, AT ODDS with the patients well-being. Then there's the huge cost and manpower drain for businesses to to deal with this eff-up system. I see it firsthand, as a business owner...

Sadly, yes. It just happened last summer or fall, I think. He was about 19 and it was a single car accident. She didn't say anything at the time, but eventually she came back to the pod and mentioned it in some thread and then it got a lot of attention. Very sad.
You know I really like Mary Mary, but I think it was incredibly irresponsible to have another baby when she thought she had MS. Because even if she might live decades longer, she was potentially bringing a baby into the world that she might not be able to care for, or might have to care for her someday sooner than most children have to care for their parents. And now to know that she had something else that through pregnancy she could have given to that baby - and all the others before her - it's just a head shaker for me.
I know none of us ever know what hardships might lie ahead for us, but in her situation, she knew something was very wrong.

I googled Lyme disease and pregnancy and found people say the baby isn't affected, it's the mother who suffers since she can't take the best treatment during pregnancy. Seems to be people saying you can and can not breast feed. Mary said yesterday she no longer breast feeds.

You are right...unless you are on government aid. I do think that there should be federal guidelines that once you start government aid, you can't be eligible for any more due to having more kids. If you get out there and support yourself, have a whole fucking football team, but if you are living off others, then hold off on the babymaking until you are able to get off the aid and support your family. I didn't do a big party for my child each year, and I only had the one. I think it is better to do an every other year like Mary does so they are not overly entitled and spoiled with too many gifts. I had worked about 70% of the time since we had kids and my husband and I both agree that I am more wired to work outside the home instead of being home all the time, but I am home with the kids more than he is due to his work hours. As for children, the amount to have and how many is to be between the husband, wife and the Lord. Some feel they "need" to have a lot. I for one, know what I can physically and psychologically handle, so there's no pushing out litters in this LDS home. As far as "subservient" - ha! My husband and I are equal partners.

They skim HUGE amounts of money off the system, they make obscene profits while simultaniously jacking up premiums and lobby congress for more tax loopholes. In my experience, for-profit insurance companies are HUGELY inefficient and are, in fact, AT ODDS with the patients well-being. Then there's the huge cost and manpower drain for businesses to to deal with this eff-up system. I see it firsthand, as a business owner...

The fact is Medicare is a pretty damn great program. Popular with those who use it (try taking it away), efficient, and only about a 3-5% overhead. (I know, I know...you know somebody who hates it or know of some fraud scandal. 100% perfection 100% of the time is impossible, sorry.)
Also, historically, the government and government-funded programs are the ones who make new scientific discoveries, much more than private firms. Private companies no longer really invest for the long term; typically it's all about immediate, stockholder-appeasing returns while top management slurps up as much capital as they can.

Sadly, yes. It just happened last summer or fall, I think. He was about 19 and it was a single car accident. She didn't say anything at the time, but eventually she came back to the pod and mentioned it in some thread and then it got a lot of attention. Very sad.

Because even if she might live decades longer, she was potentially bringing a baby into the world that she might not be able to care for, or might have to care for her someday sooner than most children have to care for their parents. Yakiscrappy dh is a foot doctor, I don't recall Mary ever talking about what her dh does. The only time she's free to spend money is on her yearly girls weekend trip to Seattle and then she's shopping for the kids. Their vacations are always related to his work conferences, but still exotic locales.
Mary bought her girls beds at Ikea for $30 then upholstered it herself.

You are right...unless you are on government aid. I do think that there should be federal guidelines that once you start government aid, you can't be eligible for any more due to having more kids. If you get out there and support yourself, have a whole fucking football team, but if you are living off others, then hold off on the babymaking until you are able to get off the aid and support your family. I am for aid, just not the abuse and dependence on it.

I didn't do a big party for my child each year, and I only had the one. I think it is better to do an every other year like Mary does so they are not overly entitled and spoiled with too many gifts. Kids have too many toys these days. She does an every other year big party. Heck, I only got one big "friends" over party during my childhood. I turned out okay.

Oh honey, you don't know anything about being a Mormon. Husbands may seem invested in their wives, but no more so than they would be in their dogs (and a dog wouldn't be pressured to get an outside job either). Yes, Mormon women are expected to be subservient, remain forever thin, do all of the cooking & cleaning, and push out the babies. Expect to spend three hours a week in church and a few more "volunteering" for the church. Mormon women have a much higher rate of depression than the general population. Also be prepared to have your husband become a god on his own planet after he dies. You only get to go along if he invites you.

I had worked about 70% of the time since we had kids and my husband and I both agree that I am more wired to work outside the home instead of being home all the time, but I am home with the kids more than he is due to his work hours. As for children, the amount to have and how many is to be between the husband, wife and the Lord. Some feel they "need" to have a lot. I for one, know what I can physically and psychologically handle, so there's no pushing out litters in this LDS home. As far as "subservient" - ha! My husband and I are equal partners.
