When you are overweight your body is not working optimally. You might have any number of medical conditions or be borderline for them. He has absolutely NO learning disabilities whatsoever and is tops in his class for both reading and math skills. He also had ALL of his vaccines on schedule as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Thank you #62. That is what I was trying to say. SCIENTISTS believe there may be a link. It is certainly worth more studies. Since Autism can not be "cured", it is critical that possible causes be identified and quantified for future prevention.
As I have said before, why is that every parent/family member that has an autistic person in their life are hell-bent on denying that life style or genetics are possible causes?

I can see why they'd be hell-bent on denying that a certain lifestyle is the cause, if they know they didn't have that lifestyle during their pregnancy! If you've never been obese you know that can't be The Big Answer. If you've never eaten an egg in your life, why would you agree that eating eggs causes Autism? You KNOW that can't be it. It hurts like hell when people think you did something "wrong" that caused your child to have struggles. Especially when you did everything right and followed doctor's orders to the tee. I have a child with birth defects and I can't tell you how many people assume I took big bad strong anti-depressants during the pregnancy because of those daytime sleazy lawyer commercials. And it makes me fucking mad that people believe everything they read or see on tv as the ONE truth without even looking into it. Do I think anti-depressants may be a possible cause (one of many) of birth defects? Sure. But those cheesy commercials shouting it like it's THE cause makes my own family whisper behind my back accusing me of "doing this" to my child. And it makes me crazy. I have 2 distant relatives that had babies and used fucking crack throughout their pregnancies, and their babies are healthy and smart. Then I do everything I'm supposed to, gagging down vitamins and vegetables that I hate, practically vomiting over the amount of water I made myself drink...and then have a baby with severe birth defects. I live with guilt every minute of every day, I don't need the world shouting about what I may have done wrong to "do this" to my baby. I obsess over it plenty on my own, thanks, why don't you take care of your own family, kwim? There are many complex causes of any medical problem, there's no one correct big lightbulb moment answer that's going to be the explanation for all autism or other issues. And people jumping on the "Ohhhh, it's obesity that causes it!" train is infuriating - especially to mothers who have never been obese but have children with autism. People need to slow down and think through these "causes" they're coming up with. Could there be a link between obesity and autism? Sure. But duh it's obviously not the end all and be all cause. Plenty of thin mothers have Autistic children. You've gotta cut them some slack. They're hell-bent on denying things they KNOW don't apply to their health or pregnancy.

While I agree that losing an infant is tragic, I have to ask myself why someone who already has two healthy children would risk their life and the life of their unborn child by becoming pregnant again. I hope that she stops trying to have more children for her sake and for her other kid's sakes.

I know who you're talking about, that's not sa27 though. I can't remember her name, but her profile pic is of a tall slender dark haired woman. I believe she's sitting down in the photo.
My thoughts on sa27 is that if I were in her position I would have aborted the baby when I found out he had that disorder. It seems cruel to bring him into the world so he can die.

As for abortion vs. waiting to give birth, I think giving birth would be much, much harder for me to do personally, but I would just have to. I don't know that I could have an abortion (I'm pro-choice, just saying for me personally I could not even if I knew the baby was very sick).
Also, while I do think her upbeat persona at this time kind of....surprising...., the posting from the hospital is not. Guys, seriously, I have a daughter who is in the hospital often and there is a LOT of downtime to fill. The baby/child is often in a treatment room or having a procedure done or sleeping or whatever. It's impossible to be tending to the child 24 hours a day. I've spent many hours online in the hospital simply because there is nothing else I could be doing for her during those times. So the updating I don't find odd. Plus, it's helpful to feel the support coming in, I've btdt. When you feel so alone and sad in the hospital, just the idea that strangers are thinking about you for a minute is very comforting. I'd probably be reading the Peas' messages too if I were her.

This could be true about the drugs. My BFF that died when we were young, her mother was positively beaming at the wake and funeral. Like, bizarrely happy and upbeat. I know she's not that strong to put on a front like that, so she had to be on some serious meds.

Then the girl was born and the whole thing was a mistake - she's a 4 year old now and totally fine and healthy, smart, no issues whatsoever.

It's just not like people picture it being 24/7. Sometimes you're not allowed to hold or touch the baby for certain periods of time - you can stare at the baby for a half hour from a chair 6 feet away, but eventually you'll go insane if you don't do something else besides stare. Sorry but I've spent half my parenting life in a hospital and there are NO parents that are continuously tending to their baby 24/7 - we all start out trying, but it's physically not possible. Especially in the NICU where I assume her baby is. Another example - the nurses make you leave a lot... if another baby is having trouble or if there are rounds, if they are transferring shifts, etc. What else are you going to do besides going online? Go to the mall? Go for a walk? No, you don't want to leave your baby. So that leaves reading (which you can't do due to lack of focus), or flipping through a magazine mindlessly or surfing around online.
I'm not trying to be a psycho about it here, but seriously, I can't stand it when the Peas rake moms at the hospital over the coals for being online. My DH absolutely detests being online and even he uses a laptop when we're living at the hospital. There is nothing else to do. Sometimes he'll watch tv, but in the ICUs the little tvs have to be played very softly so you don't make all the babies anxious and he can't hear well enough to bother.
191 - I didn't say my cousin had a DNA confirmation or anything and the condition was NOT Trisomy 18. Of course there was a chance it could've been a mistake, and luckily it was in her case. My point is just that they were certain enough about it to tell her she should have an abortion. And these were specialists in 3 different states telling her this, not some small-town quack. So there are mistakes even when they're "so sure".
My point was just that due to these mistakes (sure sa27 had an amnio, but let's say her paperwork got mixed up with someone else's - some 1 in a million mistake), there are a lot of lawsuits now and I didn't think the doctors would be able to have sa27 on major meds while she was still pregnant. Their hospitals would surely nix that to avoid any potential lawsuits. I'm just saying she was so upbeat and almost excited-seeming even BEFORE the birth. I can totally see them giving her meds after the birth, but I doubted they would do it beforehand.

He has absolutely NO learning disabilities whatsoever and is tops in his class for both reading and math skills. He also had ALL of his vaccines on schedule as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Thank you #62. That is what I was trying to say. SCIENTISTS believe there may be a link. It is certainly worth more studies. Since Autism can not be "cured", it is critical that possible causes be identified and quantified for future prevention.
As I have said before, why is that every parent/family member that has an autistic person in their life are hell-bent on denying that life style or genetics are possible causes?

I can see why they'd be hell-bent on denying that a certain lifestyle is the cause, if they know they didn't have that lifestyle during their pregnancy! If you've never been obese you know that can't be The Big Answer. If you've never eaten an egg in your life, why would you agree that eating eggs causes Autism? You KNOW that can't be it. It hurts like hell when people think you did something "wrong" that caused your child to have struggles. Especially when you did everything right and followed doctor's orders to the tee. I have a child with birth defects and I can't tell you how many people assume I took big bad strong anti-depressants during the pregnancy because of those daytime sleazy lawyer commercials. And it makes me fucking mad that people believe everything they read or see on tv as the ONE truth without even looking into it. Do I think anti-depressants may be a possible cause (one of many) of birth defects? Sure. But those cheesy commercials shouting it like it's THE cause makes my own family whisper behind my back accusing me of "doing this" to my child. And it makes me crazy. I have 2 distant relatives that had babies and used fucking crack throughout their pregnancies, and their babies are healthy and smart. Then I do everything I'm supposed to, gagging down vitamins and vegetables that I hate, practically vomiting over the amount of water I made myself drink...and then have a baby with severe birth defects. I live with guilt every minute of every day, I don't need the world shouting about what I may have done wrong to "do this" to my baby. I obsess over it plenty on my own, thanks, why don't you take care of your own family, kwim? There are many complex causes of any medical problem, there's no one correct big lightbulb moment answer that's going to be the explanation for all autism or other issues. And people jumping on the "Ohhhh, it's obesity that causes it!" train is infuriating - especially to mothers who have never been obese but have children with autism. Guys, seriously, I have a daughter who is in the hospital often and there is a LOT of downtime to fill. The baby/child is often in a treatment room or having a procedure done or sleeping or whatever. It's impossible to be tending to the child 24 hours a day. I've spent many hours online in the hospital simply because there is nothing else I could be doing for her during those times. So the updating I don't find odd. Plus, it's helpful to feel the support coming in, I've btdt. When you feel so alone and sad in the hospital, just the idea that strangers are thinking about you for a minute is very comforting. I'd probably be reading the Peas' messages too if I were her.
So hmmmm, I totally believed this one and still do, I think. But interesting how many people here don't. What is it exactly that has the hair prickling on this one?
The only thing that seems off to me is her upbeat positive mood.
Having more children after the death of one is very common. Wanting to have several children is normal - I'd have a bunch more if I could afford it. Having children without a husband? Well, if you're not getting any younger and don't have a boyfriend and you want babies, why not?
Maybe after having done this once she was more prepared. They could also have her on some serious drugs right now.

This could be true about the drugs. My BFF that died when we were young, her mother was positively beaming at the wake and funeral. Like, bizarrely happy and upbeat. I know she's not that strong to put on a front like that, so she had to be on some serious meds.
Not sure about this girl though, would they be able to legally prescribe them to her while she was still pregnant?
I mean I know the baby wasn't supposed to be ok, but mistakes happen. I have a cousin who was told throughout her pregnancy that her daughter would be severely brain damaged, be basically in a vegetative state, probably would be born still, etc. She almost had an abortion but couldn't do it. Her baby shower was cancelled, they didn't buy anything for the baby... Then the girl was born and the whole thing was a mistake - she's a 4 year old now and totally fine and healthy, smart, no issues whatsoever.
sa27 had genetic testing, she knew the disorder, there is no way she could have had a normal baby after that diagnosis 190. So either your cousin just had an ultrasound, or you're full of shit. With an amino the take DNA they know what they're talking about when they tell you there is a problem.

If my child was expected to live only days maybe weeks at the very best I would be doing everything to be there every minute I possibly could. Posting online to a message board I'm moderately involved in wouldn't even be on my radar.
It's possible you can't be there for some treatments or testing, 192. So you do something to occupy your mind.

Uh, no, I've heard of Trisomy 18 way before Santorum's kid. And a newborn, even a normal one, does pretty much nothing- why not get some support? You can be with the child 24 hours a day and still pea- the infant won't notice.
But that said, alarm bells off here, too.
192 - I'm just saying the doctors kick you out a lot or you have to eat a sandwich for lunch in the cafeteria, so you sign on to the laptop while you're down there. It's just not like people picture it being 24/7. Sometimes you're not allowed to hold or touch the baby for certain periods of time - you can stare at the baby for a half hour from a chair 6 feet away, but eventually you'll go insane if you don't do something else besides stare. Sorry but I've spent half my parenting life in a hospital and there are NO parents that are continuously tending to their baby 24/7 - we all start out trying, but it's physically not possible. Especially in the NICU where I assume her baby is. Another example - the nurses make you leave a lot... if another baby is having trouble or if there are rounds, if they are transferring shifts, etc. What else are you going to do besides going online? Go to the mall? Go for a walk? No, you don't want to leave your baby. So that leaves reading (which you can't do due to lack of focus), or flipping through a magazine mindlessly or surfing around online.
I'm not trying to be a psycho about it here, but seriously, I can't stand it when the Peas rake moms at the hospital over the coals for being online. My DH absolutely detests being online and even he uses a laptop when we're living at the hospital. There is nothing else to do. Sometimes he'll watch tv, but in the ICUs the little tvs have to be played very softly so you don't make all the babies anxious and he can't hear well enough to bother.
191 - I didn't say my cousin had a DNA confirmation or anything and the condition was NOT Trisomy 18. Of course there was a chance it could've been a mistake, and luckily it was in her case. My point is just that they were certain enough about it to tell her she should have an abortion. And these were specialists in 3 different states telling her this, not some small-town quack. So there are mistakes even when they're "so sure".
My point was just that due to these mistakes (sure sa27 had an amnio, but let's say her paperwork got mixed up with someone else's - some 1 in a million mistake), there are a lot of lawsuits now and I didn't think the doctors would be able to have sa27 on major meds while she was still pregnant. Their hospitals would surely nix that to avoid any potential lawsuits. I'm just saying she was so upbeat and almost excited-seeming even BEFORE the birth. I can totally see them giving her meds after the birth, but I doubted they would do it beforehand.
Hmmmm, I wonder if asslan, Lowrent, and all the others defending the UC Davis pepper-spraying cops have read the investigative report?

No offense but I think you've had a pretty sheltered life if you haven't heard of Trisonomy 18 until Santorum. It's not that huge of a coincidence.
I'm not saying she's not pulling some big scam, I'm just saying this happening right after Santorum isn't enough to ring any bells.
um.. I've never heard about Trisonomy 18 before SA727. I must REALLY be sheltered.
