Sure this time it's only 25 bucks but schools nickle and dime you to death. Next it's the fall fund raiser, (this year ds's school is having 2, cookie dough and handbags), then the winter fund raiser, spring fund raiser. School sweat shirts, t-shirts and this year they've added sweat pants.
His school also does a food drive for the local food bank, shoe drive for Africa, (not sure how that works) and collects spare change that supports two kids going to school in Kenya.
His teacher also mentions in the Friday news letter you can contribute hand sanitizer, Kleenex, stickers, pencils, paper, markers etc. etc.
We aren't in a poor school district or a rich one. Just a middle class one. We participate in what we can but I get tired of it.

I don't know about other schools, but I see a breakdown of exactly where the fundraising money goes at our school - and it's all really important stuff. The number of fundraisers is overwhelming, but I can't say the schools shouldn't be doing them. They have to get the money somehow.

That was my comment, and no I'm not perfect. But, I am smart enough to understand that chips should NOT be a WEEKLY side dish! Yes, we do have chips with our meal...maybe once a month? Not multiple times a week with no veggie in sight. Planning ahead should afford the opportunity to add steamed/roasted veggies (not just starches) to all meals. It's about moderation...but the meals listed in those threads are NOT moderate at all. They are carb and junk heavy.

Why is it ok to be judgy about their menu plan and not ok to be judgy about their shopping carts? Tastykakes, 6 two liters of Coca Cola, and a jumbo sized bag of tater tots? That is the menu plan they are pushing around the Krogers in plain view of everyone and I can't help throwing a little side-eye.
According to the peas, it's because you don't know the intentions of the goods in their shopping cart. You know, they take the 6 two liters and hand them out to homeless people, the tastykakes are treats for the workers at the soup kitchen and the jumbo bag of tater tots is to make a hot dish for a mom going through chemo or some such thing. They all have pure intentions, and if you don't fall all over them to praise them, you are narcissistic and have issues.
I don't look at what people have in their cart. I want them out of my way as they graze the lard filled twinkies.

I'm very patient too but hate when people just stand there for 5 minutes in the way. The gross people with their screaming kids get on my nerves too. "MOM I WANT _______" . The lady made some rude remark, and I was so flustered I just said "who is stupid enough to park their cart in the middle of the aisle, and let their child play on the filthy floor?" I'm ashamed of the way we eat in my house after seeing how Peas react to some meals. It really isn't done on purpose. DH and I grew up in the same kind of house - meat and potatoes type meals. We have things like meatloaf, spaghetti, pork roast, chicken. We eat vegetables but really only peas, carrots, beans, and corn.
I honestly have no idea how to cook the healthy things that the Peas say I should be cooking. My mother never taught me how to cook at all, so the basics is all I know. Neither of us ever ate the leafy greens, kale, quinoa, hummus, gluten free stuff or whatever else we're supposed to be eating these days.
We're all healthy and exercise and we're all at good weights for our ages (adults and kids). It never bothered me until I read the comments here and on 2Peas about some meals. Surely I'm not the only one that grew up with this type of food and continues it?
I'm sure you're not but why don't you have any desire to branch out? The Internet can teach you how to prep and cook absolutely anything from leeks to fennel to beef cheeks to tripe. Not that I'm buying tripe but still. Your mom not teaching you how to roast acorn squash or prep kohlrabi is no reason not to look that shit up on YouTube and teach yourself. If you're happy eating spaghetti and garlic bread then I guess don't worry about it. You're denying yourself some tasty stuff though.

My son can't swallow pills whole either so I put them in pudding or applesauce for him. So much easier and that's what they do for old people at the nursing home who can't swallow easily.
123, I grew up the same way. Youtube, the Food Network, a cooking class here and there and just wigging it have proven to help a lot. I had no clue how to do anything besides boil water for pasta and frying up a grilled cheese when I first got married. Just branching out and trying very simple things is enough to maybe help you find something new that you had no idea you liked before.
Spaghetti squash is a good place to start, very simple to make and it really tastes great.
On that thread about the one hit wonders she said her dad's group Spanky and the Gang had several top 10 or 20 hits. Then she came back to list numerous other family members 'famous' in music.

The funny thing is, Kelpea doesn't even rate a mention in his obituary or tribute website. Nor did she get a mention in his daughters obituary, when there were other half-siblings and a cousin mentioned.

Fortunately I had an MIL and a BIL who were great cooks and I learned a lot from both of them, and gradually developed a repertoire of tasty, yet reliable, meals. Thanks to an understanding and patient hubby, I was able to take 1 day a week as my "experimental cooking" day to try a new set of recipes. I had my share of culinary disasters, but ended up with more successes than failures and gained confidence.
As others said - use the internet as a resource - pick a core ingredient your entire family likes (say, pork roast or chicken) and build around that. Good luck
Cooks Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen rocks - I love how they discuss recipe development, food science and how detailed their instructions are. Hard to fuck up if you follow their directions.
#123 yeah I think most of us grew up with that type of food. As I have gotten older I have branched out and tried new things here and there until I eat a much varied diet than I did as a child. To the poster who said diets changes every 4-5 years, that may be true but eating a diet rich in fruits and veggies is NEVER going to be bad advice. Leafy greens are good for you, that doesn't change. #123 a favorite in our house is curried shrimp, which is a little high in sodium but is filled with lots of yummy good stuff. Depending on your family size one lb. bag of frozen shrimp(not jumbo but not tiny), I buy curried cubes they are bit like bullion, two bunches of kale, one bag of baby bell peppers(red, yellow and orange), 1 cup of brown jasmine rice... and I think that's it. sautee shrimp until transluscent, then add sliced(super thin) peppers and as much of the chopped up kale as you can manage, as the kale cooks down add more until it's all incorporated. Then add 1 cup of water and 2 cubes of curry mix well. Serve over rice. It's good, try it!

I was raised the "meat and potatoes" way also. I cooked meals that way for years, in fact I still do include some of those meals in my monthly rotation.
It took me a lot of years to branch out and start cooking differently. I will second the America's test kitchen and cook illustrated books, magazines, and TV shows. I'll also add cooks country to that list of great resources for learning to cook different ways. Very easy and fun recipes. Plus lots of other information.

Sure this time it's only 25 bucks but schools nickle and dime you to death. Next it's the fall fund raiser, (this year ds's school is having 2, cookie dough and handbags), then the winter fund raiser, spring fund raiser. School sweat shirts, t-shirts and this year they've added sweat pants.
His school also does a food drive for the local food bank, shoe drive for Africa, (not sure how that works) and collects spare change that supports two kids going to school in Kenya.
His teacher also mentions in the Friday news letter you can contribute hand sanitizer, Kleenex, stickers, pencils, paper, markers etc. etc.
We aren't in a poor school district or a rich one. Just a middle class one. We participate in what we can but I get tired of it.

Why is it ok to be judgy about their menu plan and not ok to be judgy about their shopping carts? Tastykakes, 6 two liters of Coca Cola, and a jumbo sized bag of tater tots? I'm ashamed of the way we eat in my house after seeing how Peas react to some meals. It really isn't done on purpose. DH and I grew up in the same kind of house - meat and potatoes type meals. We have things like meatloaf, spaghetti, pork roast, chicken. We eat vegetables but really only peas, carrots, beans, and corn.
I honestly have no idea how to cook the healthy things that the Peas say I should be cooking. My mother never taught me how to cook at all, so the basics is all I know. Neither of us ever ate the leafy greens, kale, quinoa, hummus, gluten free stuff or whatever else we're supposed to be eating these days.
We're all healthy and exercise and we're all at good weights for our ages (adults and kids). It never bothered me until I read the comments here and on 2Peas about some meals. Surely I'm not the only one that grew up with this type of food and continues it?

If you and your family are healthy, don't mind the freaks here and on the pod. If you are interested in exploring more food options, pick one new menu item a week and give it a try. Fish, steamed veggies, whole grain anything...it's all good.

My son can't swallow pills whole either so I put them in pudding or applesauce for him. So much easier and that's what they do for old people at the nursing home who can't swallow easily.
Advice:: don't marry person who can't swallow a pill. You don't want a partner with that sensitive a gag reflex.

123, I grew up the same way. Youtube, the Food Network, a cooking class here and there and just wigging it have proven to help a lot. I had no clue how to do anything besides boil water for pasta and frying up a grilled cheese when I first got married. Just branching out and trying very simple things is enough to maybe help you find something new that you had no idea you liked before.
Spaghetti squash is a good place to start, very simple to make and it really tastes great.

#123 - my mother was a wonderful woman but the shittiest cook of all time; meal time was torture in my house. Fortunately I had an MIL and a BIL who were great cooks and I learned a lot from both of them, and gradually developed a repertoire of tasty, yet reliable, meals. Thanks to an understanding and patient hubby, I was able to take 1 day a week as my "experimental cooking" day to try a new set of recipes. I had my share of culinary disasters, but ended up with more successes than failures and gained confidence.
As others said - use the internet as a resource - pick a core ingredient your entire family likes (say, pork roast or chicken) and build around that. Good luck
Cooks Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen rocks - I love how they discuss recipe development, food science and how detailed their instructions are. Hard to fuck up if you follow their directions.
#123 yeah I think most of us grew up with that type of food. As I have gotten older I have branched out and tried new things here and there until I eat a much varied diet than I did as a child.
To the poster who said diets changes every 4-5 years, that may be true but eating a diet rich in fruits and veggies is NEVER going to be bad advice. Leafy greens are good for you, that doesn't change.
#123 a favorite in our house is curried shrimp, which is a little high in sodium but is filled with lots of yummy good stuff. Depending on your family size one lb. bag of frozen shrimp(not jumbo but not tiny), I buy curried cubes they are bit like bullion, two bunches of kale, one bag of baby bell peppers(red, yellow and orange), 1 cup of brown jasmine rice... and I think that's it.
sautee shrimp until transluscent, then add sliced(super thin) peppers and as much of the chopped up kale as you can manage, as the kale cooks down add more until it's all incorporated. Then add 1 cup of water and 2 cubes of curry mix well. Serve over rice.
It's good, try it!

I was raised the "meat and potatoes" way also. I cooked meals that way for years, in fact I still do include some of those meals in my monthly rotation.
It took me a lot of years to branch out and start cooking differently. I will second the America's test kitchen and cook illustrated books, magazines, and TV shows. I'll also add cooks country to that list of great resources for learning to cook different ways. Very easy and fun recipes. Plus lots of other information.

I make a salad almost every single day, 2x a day on weekends. Those salad choppers are worth every penny. Throw lettuce (chunks of iceberg or any of the mixed greens) in the strainer bowl of a salad spinner and chop away. Rinse under cold water, then spin out the water. Makes chopping tomatoes, onions, celery even carrots or boiled eggs fast and easy.

All the studies I read showed that all lettuce was tainted with feces (due to poor hygene practices of the workers and port-a-potties on the fields for the workers to use). I don't think bagged is that much worse than regular.
