10 years ago when my kids were in school, copies & copy paper were monitored and restricted - each teacher was alloted a bare minimum due to tight budgets. And this was a fairly well-off suburban school district.
I imagine it's gotten 1000x worse in today's government budget-slashing environment.

The OP of this thread has talked before about how disadvantaged her students are. Have you ever been in an inner city school? I would bet $100 that there are kids in her class that have to make supper and put younger siblings to bed every single night. (due to single parent working two jobs...)
Don't most districts issue teachers laptops so they can take them home or to meetings etc? All of our surrounding areas the teachers use blogs, online grading, and online text books. If you don't have access to a computer, you can go into the school media center before or after school or the library. There is really no excuse. Even in the districts where money is tight, schools make technology available.
I'm glad so many peas and blog bitches live in areas where they don't see the truly disadvantaged students and the schools they attend. Some of the suggestions here and at the pod are truly laughable when you look at the school and what little they have to work with.

Here's my take on the whole computer/homework issue.
The teacher is trying to conserve resources. If he makes handouts available in class, kids who DO have computer access at home will still ask for them - and then most will probably leave them in the room or lose them. If he requires kids to come see him outside of class time to pickup handouts, requiring a little bit of effort on their part, only the kids that do actually need the handouts will come and get them. I don't think he is trying to be exclusionary or mean in anyway, and once he sees who routinely comes to get handouts, I would imagine he'll have them printed out and ready for them in class (at least that's what I would do).
I used to give handouts to students in class, but would not give replacement papers to kids who lost them - they had to email me and request the missing handout. Every kid had a school-based email account and could email me from a classroom computer, if nothing else. They could go to the media center and pay $0.10 per page to print the lost handout. Most kids managed to find their misplaced papers once I required that they do more than verbally ask for a new paper.
I think the lack of reading comprehension here and at the bukkit are astounding. There are several issues going on in that thread, and people are mixing them up left and right, and using the wrong ones to prove *their* point. It's actually quite funny!

I just went into the largest VS store in the country and walked out with a headache. 10 years ago when my kids were in school, copies & copy paper were monitored and restricted - each teacher was alloted a bare minimum due to tight budgets. And this was a fairly well-off suburban school district.
I imagine it's gotten 1000x worse in today's government budget-slashing environment.
This is what happens when our schools are so broke and decrepit and teachers are only given a ration of printer paper each semester.
It's unfair that my taxes have to pay for copies because some lazy moochers dropping crotchnuggets they can't afford expect the gubmit to hand them everything!!

I don't understand the big deal of going in during lunch once a week to get an assignment. Do I think it is odd that he doesn't post the assignment in class? I did, until she cleared up the fact that it is worksheets and not just a list of problems inside of a textbook. The OP of this thread has talked before about how disadvantaged her students are. Have you ever been in an inner city school? I would bet $100 that there are kids in her class that have to make supper and put younger siblings to bed every single night. (due to single parent working two jobs...)
Don't most districts issue teachers laptops so they can take them home or to meetings etc? All of our surrounding areas the teachers use blogs, online grading, and online text books. If you don't have access to a computer, you can go into the school media center before or after school or the library. There is really no excuse. Even in the districts where money is tight, schools make technology available.
I'm glad so many peas and blog bitches live in areas where they don't see the truly disadvantaged students and the schools they attend. Some of the suggestions here and at the pod are truly laughable when you look at the school and what little they have to work with.

Here's my take on the whole computer/homework issue.
The teacher is trying to conserve resources. If he makes handouts available in class, kids who DO have computer access at home will still ask for them - and then most will probably leave them in the room or lose them. If he requires kids to come see him outside of class time to pickup handouts, requiring a little bit of effort on their part, only the kids that do actually need the handouts will come and get them. I don't think he is trying to be exclusionary or mean in anyway, and once he sees who routinely comes to get handouts, I would imagine he'll have them printed out and ready for them in class (at least that's what I would do).
I used to give handouts to students in class, but would not give replacement papers to kids who lost them - they had to email me and request the missing handout. Every kid had a school-based email account and could email me from a classroom computer, if nothing else. They could go to the media center and pay $0.10 per page to print the lost handout. Most kids managed to find their misplaced papers once I required that they do more than verbally ask for a new paper.
