I have a child who has been going through the diagnosis process for two+ years. I couldn't wish hard enough that he isn't on the spectrum. I would give anything to have his issues turn out to be easily fixed due to my "bad parenting."
You have no idea what it's like to go from counselor to counselor, to be on waiting lists for the best diagnosticians in the state (which by the way have waiting lists that take almost a year to get to the top of) To try every behavioral modification, to read every book you can get your hands on, just hoping for something that clicks.
All this, and we don't even have an autism diagnosis yet. It's an arduous process, it's definitely not easy to get ANY diagnosis, let alone an autism one.
Meanwhile I watch my child suffer because he's "Different". To feel helpless as he becomes overwhelmed by seemingly anything sensory inducing.
It's not fun, it sucks. You guys talk about how thankful you are that you have a "normal" child. Well guess what? The dirty little secret is that WE WISH WE DID TOO. My first child went from my first inquiry about his problems, to testing to a special ed classroom in less than 3 weeks. He was there for 3 years before they cleared him to be mainstreamed. For my other child it took 8 weeks and that was only because they felt a program at a different school would be better for him and that class started on a different schedule.
Our district has set testing dates 4 times a year and other dates can be set of individuals recommended by a teacher or doctor.
162 here- I should say I had an IEP meeting with the teachers twice a year just like a standard parent teacher conference. There were just a lot more people there. The only prep work I had to do was going over the previous IEP to say what goals I felt the child had/had not made. Then we all sat down and mapped out new goals at school and at home.

Can someone tell me just how many people ( as a percentage of population) are on he spectrum or whatever it's called because all I can come up with is that a good third of the population is autistic, a third have ADD/ADHD a few have some other issue that Moms just wet themselves over because it's more selective than some common autism or ADD diagnosis and then we have the very small percentage that manage to avoid all of that are 'normal'.

What is a month in Florida like? Well, if you are from the north, as we are, it is different in every way. The first week it seemed like all I wanted to do was sleep. I didn't bring any crafty projects with me. I had thought about bringing beads, but didn't. I could see myself not having just the right bead to do a project and bring all the beads would have been too much. So I brought a pile of books. I'm reading one about Satan right now. Sort of complex. Meanwhile my mind is planning out a journal to do when I get home. Right now it will have a clear cover and dividers. Each double layout will have space for one week -- the same week for five years. I love to look back and see what went on a year ago, two years, etc. Sometimes it will be sad, but i think if I journal the same day then they can't always be bad. Can they?

I have a child who has been going through the diagnosis process for two+ years. I couldn't wish hard enough that he isn't on the spectrum. I would give anything to have his issues turn out to be easily fixed due to my "bad parenting."
You have no idea what it's like to go from counselor to counselor, to be on waiting lists for the best diagnosticians in the state (which by the way have waiting lists that take almost a year to get to the top of) To try every behavioral modification, to read every book you can get your hands on, just hoping for something that clicks.
All this, and we don't even have an autism diagnosis yet. It's an arduous process, it's definitely not easy to get ANY diagnosis, let alone an autism one.
Meanwhile I watch my child suffer because he's "Different". To feel helpless as he becomes overwhelmed by seemingly anything sensory inducing.
It's not fun, it sucks. You guys talk about how thankful you are that you have a "normal" child. Well guess what? The dirty little secret is that WE WISH WE DID TOO. No, autism is the designer-over-diagnosis for mental retardation. Kids who LEGITIMATELY and REALLY have autism are getting cheated out of the focused treatment and attention they need by the special snowflakes who are "on the spectrum" that simply have low IQ's, behavior problems or lazy parents (who also probably have a low IQ).

Surely, the first definative diagnosis needs to come from medical experts. Teachers and school admin are not qualified (nor should they need to be) to jump in to make a diagnosis and start dealing with a child not even the "experts" know what is wrong with.

This varies greatly by school, district and disability. My first child went from my first inquiry about his problems, to testing to a special ed classroom in less than 3 weeks. He was there for 3 years before they cleared him to be mainstreamed. For my other child it took 8 weeks and that was only because they felt a program at a different school would be better for him and that class started on a different schedule.
Our district has set testing dates 4 times a year and other dates can be set of individuals recommended by a teacher or doctor.
162 here- I should say I had an IEP meeting with the teachers twice a year just like a standard parent teacher conference. There were just a lot more people there. The only prep work I had to do was going over the previous IEP to say what goals I felt the child had/had not made. Then we all sat down and mapped out new goals at school and at home.

Its a tough issue for parents of disabled kids, how far do they go to protect their disabled child from having relationships with other disabled kids. These kids and young adults have sexual feelings just like the rest of us - and they have rights too. But you can't be with them every moment of the day - trust me you wouldn't believe what goes on in group homes. When it comes to love and sex the mentally handicapped are not all that different from the rest of us.
I think the rule about not bashing kids should extend to adults with disabilities. Her niece has just as much right as anyone to find love.

FWIW, most women with Down syndrome are capable of reproducing. Most men with Down syndrome are sterile. And just as with the typical population, it's a really bad idea for some people to reproduce, others not so much.
I thought many parents of Downs girls did something to stop their periods?

Can someone tell me just how many people ( as a percentage of population) are on he spectrum or whatever it's called because all I can come up with is that a good third of the population is autistic, a third have ADD/ADHD a few have some other issue that Moms just wet themselves over because it's more selective than some common autism or ADD diagnosis and then we have the very small percentage that manage to avoid all of that are 'normal'.

Really the biggest risk is that many women with Downs syndrome also have heart issues and other health problems that make carrying a child to term risky for their health. I think people greatly underestimate the abilities of those with disabilities.
