Prior to your disability application interview, you should gather the following documents to supply to the CR (the claims rep at the social security office who will do the intake for your claim). This will make the process go much more smoothly if you have this information ready, which is the following:
A) Birth Certificate B) Income verification including from wages, the VA, long or short-term disability benefits other than from social security, as well as any other income sources. C) Asset source information including life insurance policies, bank accounts, investment acounts (IRA's, 401k's, stocks, bonds, funds), real property (land, homes). D) Proof of marriage or divorce. E) Proof of Military service.

You only get one if you've paid in. Unless you're on state disability (i guess?).
If you have not paid into social security you will not get paid from it. (See your yearly statements). (Of course people hope it's there when they reach that age).
If you have a spouse that paid into it and you haven't (male/female/either way) and that paying spouse dies before you, you can collect the spouses social security.
There was a thread recently. Someone asked if she should wait to get married (a year i think) and get her deceased (diseased lol) husbands social security benefits or say screw the extra money and get married. I can't remember who it was or if she's married now.

There are two different kind of SS benefits besides the one you get at retirement age. SSD (social security disability) is when you become ill and can't work. It's based on your earnings and there's no asset requirement. There's SSI (supplemental security income) for people who haven't worked enough to qualify for SSD and it's based on household income.
The SS that kids get is based on their parent's contributions.
And what is the best way to take care of the disabled in our country? Turn them out into the streets or hide them away in state institutions to rot like they used to in eastern bloc soviet republics? I realize she wants to use the system but I want to point something out. Not everyone that is disabled uses the system. Most of the time they are denied (if they try to get assistance) because they have too much money but I'm sure they can check back when their life savings is gone..

You only get one if you've paid in. Unless you're on state disability (i guess?).
If you have not paid into social security you will not get paid from it. (See your yearly statements). (Of course people hope it's there when they reach that age).
If you have a spouse that paid into it and you haven't (male/female/either way) and that paying spouse dies before you, you can collect the spouses social security.
There was a thread recently. Someone asked if she should wait to get married (a year i think) and get her deceased (diseased lol) husbands social security benefits or say screw the extra money and get married. I can't remember who it was or if she's married now.

There are two different kind of SS benefits besides the one you get at retirement age. SSD (social security disability) is when you become ill and can't work. It's based on your earnings and there's no asset requirement. There's SSI (supplemental security income) for people who haven't worked enough to qualify for SSD and it's based on household income.
The SS that kids get is based on their parent's contributions.
AND, if you are low income, you can also qualify for BOTH SSDI and SSI.
And what is the best way to take care of the disabled in our country? Turn them out into the streets or hide them away in state institutions to rot like they used to in eastern bloc soviet republics? In spite of what the wingnuts want you to think, the vast majority of people on disability really need the help.
