In California you have to have paid in - the disability benefit is calculated based on the highest earning quarter in a base period defined by the state (i.e. if you file a claim beginning in May, the state looks at your highest earning quarter in the 12-month base period ending the previous December 31). Also for the record, there are only six states + Puerto Rico that offer state disability insurance. I have no idea how those other states (and Puerto Rico) calculate disability benefits. Otherwise, short-term disability benefits are typically purchased and paid for each month/pay period as voluntary insurance benefits.
I never post here and I have no idea why I felt the need to clarify (I work in HR and administer leaves, so I guess that's it), but there ya go. I have no idea how it works for SSI.
