This week we have state wide testing plus the end of the unit test for my course. So yeah, there's been a few days where I've not had lessons to actually go up in front and teach. State tests are so very boring to administer.
Otherwise, I sometimes check in during a prep period or during my study hall if everything is graded and caught up. My study hall is outside of my classroom so I'm really limited in what I can work on in that time period so often times I check personal email or stop in here. If there's a thread I'm following, I might make an effort during that time to check in. Also I don't always take time to read every single response to every thread and I type very fast so my responses take a few seconds and I click submit. It's not like I'm spending ten minutes responding to something. There are plenty of teachers who use study hall time in similar ways- I know teachers who did all their Christmas shopping online during her study hall time. To be honest, I hate that they have teachers doing study hall. Talk about a waste of resources. It's honestly babysitting kids who think they can get by without doing as much. I do not allow any talking and they have to show me every day that they either have an assignment to work on or a book to be reading or else I find something for them to do.
Anyway, this week has been pretty low key because of all the state tests and then our unit test so I've been bored. My grades are all caught up, my lessons planned out for my entire maternity leave (through the end of the year), and I have things pretty well organized. I don't do a lot of worksheets- we do a lot of notes together and activities like labs using various maps. But of course, I know my methods are excellent. My students enjoy my class and we have fun. I have a lot of really interactive and fun lessons and my coworkers and I have a blast planning and creating stuff. So just because I use some down time during this week of standardized testing to interact on a message board when a friend of mine is being blasted over something I think is just ridiculous doesn't mean my students are neglected or aren't learning anything. I was working at 16 years old in a grocery store and I would have been mortified if my mother contacted my boss in any way shape or form. Even when I was still needing her to call the school when I was sick I'd let her know I'd take care of contacting my job. This week we have state wide testing plus the end of the unit test for my course. So yeah, there's been a few days where I've not had lessons to actually go up in front and teach. State tests are so very boring to administer.
Otherwise, I sometimes check in during a prep period or during my study hall if everything is graded and caught up. My study hall is outside of my classroom so I'm really limited in what I can work on in that time period so often times I check personal email or stop in here. If there's a thread I'm following, I might make an effort during that time to check in. Also I don't always take time to read every single response to every thread and I type very fast so my responses take a few seconds and I click submit. It's not like I'm spending ten minutes responding to something. There are plenty of teachers who use study hall time in similar ways- I know teachers who did all their Christmas shopping online during her study hall time. To be honest, I hate that they have teachers doing study hall. Talk about a waste of resources. It's honestly babysitting kids who think they can get by without doing as much. I do not allow any talking and they have to show me every day that they either have an assignment to work on or a book to be reading or else I find something for them to do.
Anyway, this week has been pretty low key because of all the state tests and then our unit test so I've been bored. My grades are all caught up, my lessons planned out for my entire maternity leave (through the end of the year), and I have things pretty well organized. I don't do a lot of worksheets- we do a lot of notes together and activities like labs using various maps. But of course, I know my methods are excellent. My students enjoy my class and we have fun. I have a lot of really interactive and fun lessons and my coworkers and I have a blast planning and creating stuff. So just because I use some down time during this week of standardized testing to interact on a message board when a friend of mine is being blasted over something I think is just ridiculous doesn't mean my students are neglected or aren't learning anything. I'm proud that my students' trimester test scores for our coarse were the highest in the district (that's out of six middle schools) so apparently I'm doing my job well.

I was working at 16 years old in a grocery store and I would have been mortified if my mother contacted my boss in any way shape or form. Even when I was still needing her to call the school when I was sick I'd let her know I'd take care of contacting my job. Eh, I give Steph credit. She owns who she is and isn't afraid to get out there and life live - go to the beach, get photos taken, and even put them online.
