I have a child that is mentally retarded and honestly I wish they just kept it called that. Changing it to "global developmental delay" just confused me at first - when he was a baby and they kept using that term, I had hope that he would catch up. I'm college educated and intelligent, but I didn't realize doctors didn't use the term mental retardation anymore. Yes, I realized that (nice) people don't say "retard" anymore, and I agree with that 100% OF COURSE, but I didn't know even the doctors don't use the term retardation anymore. So that really screwed me up for a few months - giving me a false sense of what life would be like for my child. And even now, the older generations in our family still have hope for him to catch up even though we know he won't...they don't really believe us when we say these new terms are the same as a diagnosis of mental retardation. They are still holding out hope because the doctors haven't said mental retardation yet - which they never will, but our grandparents don't really buy this new lingo switch. Ughhhhh

That's BS. Go google and find the thread. She couldn't get her in immediately to her Dr. (she had the appt.) but wanted faster results.
I can't remember what the diagnosis was but it was something that has a fast natural progression. A faster appointment was not going to get that to slow down; it's something she has.
I'm afraid my kidlet is going blind. We went to the eye doctor today because she is "grabbing" things as she walks by them, as if to orient herself. She just isn't seeing as well as she used to. She tried to sit on the couch and missed and fell back on the floor. Her balance is off as well. The ears are fine, we went to the ped earlier this week. She's sleeping a lot as well. All this started after her recent illness. I took her to the eye dr today and he immediately made us an appt with a retinologist and made it clear that he wants us to go there asap. The earliest we can get in is Jan 14. She's missed two weeks of school already, and at least now she has Christmas vacation ahead until Jan. 5th. I feel like I'm keeping a brave face for the family, but inside I'm really crying and scared.
If I were rainbows kids the kirby would be my biggest fear.

call his local reserve office, ask to talk to the head officer.
